What will the examiners be looking for?

• Your knowledge of the general field of scholarship to which you thesis belongs
• Evidence of your critical judgement
• Your competence in designing and executing a theoretical or empirical inquiry
• Your capacity to assume responsibility for independent research in your field
• The extent to which your work is an original contribution to knowledge
• Evidence of your critical appraisal of the work of others
• Your understanding of the theoretical ideas you have introduced and used
• A clear link between your literature review and your research design
• Clarity of your thought and expression
• Your arguments being expressed logically and intelligibly
• Your ideas about how your research could be followed up in further investigations
• The implications for other researchers and teacher/practitioners

What might you be asked?

• What is this thesis about?
• What are the main claims you are making?
• What motivated you to do it?
• Summarise your key findings.
• What theory or theoreticians informed your research?
• What methodology did you draw on and why?
• What research methods did you use and why did you consider them appropriate?
• What methods did you reject and why?
• Where might there be threats to the reliability and/or validity of your findings?
• Could your data be biased?
• What are the major theoretical conflicts in your area? Where do you place your work in these conflicts?
• What were the main studies that were useful to you?
• Why did you decide to use the analytical methods you applied?
• Why are your findings important?
• What are the implications of your findings? For research? For practice?
• What would you do differently if you did this study again?
• Pick a diagram or model and explain it in detail.
• What weaknesses are there in your thesis?
• Where could one take this research area in the future?
